They left Nicola Crowe in the hands of a young PC and headed for the canteen.

“Do you still think she’s innocent?” Whitton asked Smith next to the drinks dispenser.

“I haven’t made up my mind either way,” Smith said and retrieved a bottle of mineral water. “She lied to us about where she was yesterday, and the evidence against her is pretty damning, but there’s still something nagging away at me. You were a bit rough on her back there by the way.”

“Rough?” Whitton looked at him as though she didn’t recognise him anymore. “That’s a bit rich coming from you. Go for the jugular. Wasn’t that something you used to say?”

“There’s a time and a place, Whitton, and today wasn’t that time. I would have preferred it if she’d offered the information, not had it dragged out of her. I want you to go a bit easier on her when we get back in there.”

Whitton turned around and left the room without saying another word.

“Interview with Nicola Crowe recommenced, 15:38,” Smith said and handed her the bottle of water. “Nicola, we’ve already ascertained you were at Kim Turner’s house yesterday. Now you are aware of the evidence we have, is there anything else you’d like to tell us?”

Silence.

“Anything at all?” Smith said.

“How long had you known about the affair?” Whitton had clearly ignored Smith’s advice about a more softly-softly approach.

“I’m not an idiot,” Nicola said. “But unfortunately, Danny is – I realised something was going on pretty much from the beginning.”

“So you thought you’d pay Miss Turner a friendly visit to warn her off?”

An odd smile had spread across Nicola Crowe’s face – it was quite unnatural and it unnerved Smith somewhat.

“Excuse me?” Nicola looked at Whitton.

“You heard me. You’d had enough – you went to see Kim Turner to tell her to keep her hands off your husband, things didn’t quite go to plan and you saw red. You might as well tell us everything.”

Nicola’s smile disappeared, and then she burst out laughing.

“I’m sorry,” she said when she’d managed to compose herself. “But you couldn’t be further from the truth. I had no reason to want Kim Turner dead. She was actually doing me a favour.”

“What are you talking about?” Smith asked. “Why did you go and see her?”

“To tell her she was welcome to Danny Crowe. I told her she could have him, and wished her the best of luck. She was going to need it. I don’t know what I even saw in him in the first place. I promise you she was alive and well when I left.”

“And how did she react to your suggestion?” Whitton said.

“I suppose she was relieved when she realised I was serious.”

“One thing still doesn’t make sense,” Smith said. “Can you explain how your fingerprints ended up on the softball bat?”

“No,” Nicola said. “No, I can’t.”

“You claim you didn’t kill Miss Turner,” Whitton said. “Can you think of anybody who might have wanted to hurt her?”

“Kim was sleeping with my husband, but she wasn’t a bad person.
